Daniel Riegler – Trombone, Composition

Born in 1977, Graz, Austria.

Works as a freelancer for various orchestras, ensembles and interpreter of twentieth century music as well as composer. His main field of interest as composer is the search for working concepts between improvisation and compostion in jazz and contemporary music.

He is a founding member of the „JazzWerkstatt Wien“ an artists initiative creating a working and performance platform for cutting-edge music. Furthermore Daniel is a bandleader of his 19-piece band „Studio Dan“ and member of the „Jazzwerkstatt Wien New Ensembles“.

He lives with cellist Maiken Beer and their two children in Vienna.

2013 Recording with the NDR Big Band, premiere of pieces for Studio Dan, the JazzWerkstatt Wien New Ensemble and the ensemble für neue musik zürich.

2012 Förderpreis of the City of Vienna 2012. Winner of the Publicity Preis 2012 of the SKE/AUME. Colaboration with Michel Doneda within the premiere performance of “Fanfare III”. CD release “Dekadenz”.

2011 Colaboration with Elliott Sharp for the project „In the Pelagic Zone“.

2010 Winner of the „Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik“ for the debut-release „Creatures & other stuff“

2009 Nomination for „The New Austrian Sound of Music“

2008 Leader of the „Porgy & Bess“ stageband „Studio Dan“. Winner of the „Harry-Pepl-Prize-2008“

2007 “Featured Artist” at the Jazzfestival Saalfelden and guestmusician of the Klangforum Wien. Appearances at the Opéra National de Paris, the Warsaw Autumn Festival, the Biennale Venice and Wien Modern as well as at the Frischzelle Festival Cologne and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.

2006 Appearances at the Inntöne-, Moers- and Wiesen-Jazz-Festivals and with the Klangforum Wien at the Salzburger Festspiele and the Biennale Venice. Premiere of his “Virtual Conductor II” at the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, Graz

2005 he performed as a soloist at the premiere of Gideon Nxumalo´s “Jazzfantasia” with the MIAGI-Festival Orchestra Johannesburg, South Africa.

Studied classical and jazz trombone with Rudi Josel and Ed Neumeister. (Private studies in composition with Georg Friedrich Haas a.o.)
